Creativity with AI: What will future bring to the next generation of designers?

--

Have you ever wondered what the future of design looks like? Well, last week we got a glimpse of it when we held a workshop with 10 creative kids!

The day started with exploring what inspires us, talking about design, and making mood boards. It was great to see how these young minds were already so aware of the world around them and the role design plays in shaping it. We compared pieces of inspiration to our Estonian neuroscientist Jaan Aru’s “lego blocks of creativity”, where collecting inspiration is like collecting Lego blocks in the brain, and creativity is the ability to build something new from these pieces.

Then, we moved on to the main focus of the workshop — the world of AI. We started with an introduction to what AI is and how it can be used in design. We then looked at various AI tools and explored their features and applications. We wanted to give the kids an understanding of the tools that are available already now and start thinking what could the future bring.

After a quick break, we got down to business and started creating posters in pairs, each pair or individual given a letter to make a poster for. The kids were encouraged to let their creativity run wild and experiment with Figma and the AI tools they had just learned about. The energy in the room was electric as they worked together to create posters that were not only visually stunning but also conveyed a message that was important to them.

By the end of the workshop, we had created six posters, spelling out “VIVITA”. Each poster contained elements and text that resembled our studio, and the kids’ creativity shone through in each one. It was amazing to see how each team had approached the task in a unique and creative way.

To top off the day, we visited Velvet design agency, where the kids got to see how real designers work and show off the posters. The agency give us a a warm welcome, tour in their studio and an awesome feedback to the prints (that they were also happy to print out). They were even so impressed with the talent and creativity of our young designers that they offered to hire all of them on the spot! (Okay maybe the last part was a joke, but we were all blown away by the creativity of the participants).

The workshop was a success and we hope that the experience inspired the kids to continue exploring their creativity and to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible in an ever-changing world that sometimes may seen dystopian.

What the future will bring — we don’t know. However, we can take action now by exploring the possibilities and threats of emerging technologies like AI and inspiring the next generation to do the same. By equipping young people with the tools and skills they need to navigate the future, we can help ensure that they are prepared to face the challenges ahead and seize the opportunities that arise. Through workshops and other initiatives, we can encourage young people to think creatively and critically about the role of technology in our world and to use their talents and skills to shape a better future for us all.
