VIVITA’s second summer city camp week started with Creative Bites, where we refuted the saying “don’t play with food”. For three days, the main menu featured a number of experiments with food. For dessert was one business challenge.

Three workshop bites

On the first day of the camp, a total of 21 super-hardworking young people got together, looking forward to an exciting marathon of workshops. As a warm-up, we started with a fun introductory game, where during the rock-paper-scissors duel, the participants transformed from an amoeba to a human. Morning wake-up call done — let’s move on to the workshops!

In the first workshop, we made a pinhole camera, where we used instant coffee as food. Sounds incredible that a coffee can saves pictures? It is not impossible, only the right tools are needed. Everyone finished their pinhole camera, took a photo, and showed a revelation mixed of instant coffee, vitamin c, and baking soda in a dark room.

After a delicious lunch at the Fotografiska café, Katarina from Ringkarp came to visit, broadening the horizons of the kids about the world of rubbish, recycling and packaging.

Before the end of the first day, we continued with the workshops — first we made a wax wrap, after which the whole room was full of sweet smells. Then we took out the old Fotografiska restaurant menu soaked in water the day before and blended it into paper pulp. The workshop was the perfect way to explain the paper making process. We also prepared frames for each participant to add pulp to. After that, everyone decorated the paper according to their desires, either with dried flowers or grass seeds. Paper with grass seeds could later be placed in the soil, where it will germinate.

A new challenge face the youngsters

On the morning of the second day, Kooker, VLND Burger and Fotografiska Restaurant visited. All three catering companies presented the young designers with one problem that the campers started to solve in teams. Six teams, three problems, four hours. The girls from Kooker made a quick pancake shoot for everyone, whereafter everybody started to generate their ideas.

Problems which the kids started to solve:

KOOKER: “How to reduce the amount of packaging while serving the mini pancakes?”
Fotografiska restaurant: “What should the roof garden be like to meet the restaurant’s needs for vegetables?”
VLND Burger: “How to make it easier to sort garbage during the working day?”

The young designers faced the challenge very well, and the prototypes that were made in the afternoon were stunning. The campers made powerful models of Fotografiska’s future roof garden, VLND Burger got two detailed designed bins, one of which was also a smart robot. Kooker’s packaging problem also found two complete new design solutions.

Speakers and burgers

On the third day, we started the day building a bluetooth speaker, where the campers learned how to solder the wires and were also able to work with a couple of woodworking machines. We used old baby food jars to create the speakers — again a nice and creative way to play with food (packaging)!

The last day of the camp was all about cooking and 24 vegetarian burgers had to be prepared. Before lunch, we divided the camp into teams, where half of the campers came to the kitchen island and began peeling, grating, cutting, mixing, baking, while the other half of the team prepared the tables. The whole process went fast and smooth, and the delicious veggies were prepared at the speed of light. You can find the recipe for burgers here.
